The Casualties of 1917

 

 

Pte 34008 Herbert Dwyer of 8, Ashwood Ave Gorton has been reported missing at Wancourt on the 23rd April. His body was found and buried by men of the 42nd Machine Gun Corps. Listed on the Arras memorial. Aged 28. Joined the Battalion on the 14th July 1916. A grocer’s manager. Parents: John and Elizabeth.

Sgt 18385 John, James Duff of 2, Ebenezer Rd Red bank Manchester has been reported missing at Wancourt on the 23rd April and later reported killed on that date. Leaves a widow, Mary Jane and 4 children, Florence, Robert, William and John. A window cleaner.

Pte 43224 William Charlesworth of 31, Major Cross St Widnes has died of wounds received on the 8-4-17 aged 29. Pte Charlesworth and his Lewis gun team were on outpost duty in front of the lines at Mercatel on the 4th April. At 4.45am, they returned to the front line. Pte Charlesworth, who was carrying, 2 Lewis gun ammo canisters, jumped into the trench, and impaled his thigh on a bayonet fixed to a rifle that was leaning against the trench. He was sent to 32nd Stationary hospital at Wimereux. He has since died of an abdominal haemorrhage. He leaves a widow, Beatrice Mary and
3 children. William, John and Thomas, Arthur. An iron worker.

Pte 8511 Henry Drake of 98, Southwell St Harpurhey died on 27th March, at the 55th Casualty Clearing Station of a Gun Shot Wound to the chest aged 30. Formerly a Sergeant in the Battalion and reverted to private on 2-12-15. He leaves a widow, Florence. A warehouseman.

 

Pte 39525 Joseph Dodson of 60, Vere St Salford was shot in the back on 23rd April at Wancourt. He has died of wounds at 43rd CCS 3 days later [26th April] aged 33. Father: Joseph. A clerk.

L/Cpl 28054 James Day of 116, Robinson St Chadderton has been killed on the 3rd December aged 27. He leaves a widow, Betty and a son James, Edward. A collier.

Pte 43213 James Gatley of 26, Church St, Wincham, and Northwich has been killed in action at Ypres on the 31st July aged 20. Parents Thomas and Mary. Joined the Battalion on the 1-9-16.

Pte 43297 Bertie Gray of 86, Ravilla Rd Selly park Birmingham has been reported missing, assumed killed, on the 23rd April aged 19. Father George. Joined the battalion on the 1-9-16.

Pte 41658 William Francis of Wharf cottage Salcot, Essex fell on 17th April, aged 37. Leaves a widow, Caroline and a daughter Vera. A small-holder.

Pte 8566 George, Eric Fuller of 7, Newton Ave Longsight has been killed in action on 31st July aged 21. Parents: John, Edward and Annie, Jane. A clerk.

 

Pte 39401 Alwyn Farthing of 80, Junction St Hulme has suffered a GSW to the arm at Wancourt on 23rd April. Wounded again, on 3rd December by shrapnel, died in the 53rd casualty clearing station on 6th December aged 21. Parents: Harry and Elizabeth. A grocer’s assistant. Joined the Battalion in the field, on 20th January.

Pte 8220 Joseph Lattery of 42, Kirk St Ancoats has been wounded with a gun shot wound to the chest on 2nd August. Aged 30. A warehouseman.

 

Pte 8978 Richard Dolben Williams, a signaller, of 46, Wilbraham Rd Chorlton cum Hardy has been admitted to Clandon park Hospital, Guilford, with gas poisoning on the 10th march, He was  moved to Broom house VAD hospital, on the 30th March and then to the Royal Hubert hospital, on 26th April. He was discharged as no longer fit for active service on the 15th September, aged 23. Parents Richard Dolben and Mary. A salesman.

Sgt 9221 John, Oliver Pugh of 7, Ancoats Grove, Every St Ancoats has received shrapnel wounds to his left arm and thigh, on 31st July. Sent to 13th General hospital Boulogne. Invalided to England and admitted to the East Lancs war hospital, on 9th August. Discharged as no longer fit on the13th February, 1918 aged 29. Wife Emma and 2 children. John, Edwin and Jessie. A policeman with Manchester police joined the force on 18th November 1910.Formerly served in the 5th VB Manchester Regiment.

Pte 13055 Alfred, John Balding of 34, Hannah St Middleton has been killed in action, on 30th June aged 23. Leaves a widow, Martha, Ann. A wire worker. His grave located in 1921 by a grave registration unit.

Pte 34820 Alfred Baumber of The “smithy” Flixton Rd Flixton has been killed in action at Wancourt on the 23rd April aged 26. Joined the Battalion, on 12th July 1916.  Father William. A soap maker.

Pte 43219 Jim Brindley of 53, Fence St Macclesfield has been killed at Wancourt on the 23rd April aged 26. A cotton weaver. Joined the Battalion on the 1-9-16.

Pte 39404 William, Bernard Coulson of 20, Mead Grove Longsight has died of multiple gun shot wounds on the 18th May, at 1/5th Northern general hospital, Leicester aged 22.
 
Sgt 43151 Fred Bird of 30, Nelson St Accrington has been reported missing at Wancourt on the 23rd April aged 21.

Pte 43289 George, Edward Cooke of 171, Caversham Rd Reading has been killed at Neuville Vitasse on the 25th March.

Pte 8522 clarence Dale [A signaller] of 30, Nicholas Rd, Chorlton cum hardy was shot in the head on the 12th June, and died the following day, aged 21.

Pte 43288 William Copperthwaite of 220, Liverpool Rd Reading was killed on the 22nd April at Wancourt aged 40.

Pte 43290 Victor Cooper of “The vineries “Sunninghill, Berkshire has been killed at Neuville Vitasse on the 8th April aged 33.

Pte 41653 Ebenezer, James Cornell of 34, Canterbury Rd Colchester has been killed on the 31st July aged 40. Leaves a widow, May, Esther.

Pte 9395 Wallace Hampson [a stretcher bearer] of 17, Seddon St Longsight died of meningitis at 12th Stationary hospital, St.Pol, on the 30th January.

Pte 41609 Harry Harvey [C.Coy] of Sunnyside cottage, Sands, High Wycombe was killed on the 23rd April aged 30.

Pte 9185 Samuel Hamer of 111, Mottram Rd Stalybridge was reported wounded and missing at Wancourt on 23rd April aged 23.

Pte 25863 Harold Herbert of 23, Renshaw St Hulme was killed on the 31st July aged 21.

L/Cpl 43231 Robert Hargreaves [marksman] of 598, Blackburn Rd Bolton was killed at Wancourt on the23rd April aged 25. Leaves a widow: Vangeline.

Pte 43232 James Hall of 6, Topley St Queens Park Manchester has been reported wounded and missing at Wancourt on the 23rd April aged 21. A warehouseman.

Sgt 43305 Albert Hall of 177, St Albans Rd Watford was reported missing at Wancourt on the 23rd April aged 30. Leaves a widow, Maud and a daughter Elsie. A Carman on the trams. Buried in Cuckoo Passage cemetery.

Pte 41631 Ernest, Edward Hills of 26, Milton Rd Margate has been reported missing at Wancourt on the 23rd April aged 29. Leaves a widow: Nellie, Mary.

Pte 43420 Arthur Horn of 23, Parkfield Rd South Harrow was reported missing at Wancourt on the 23rd April aged 34.

Pte 43422 Herbert, Edward Knight of 15, Liddell Gardens, Kensal Rise is reported missing at Wancourt on the 23rd April aged 21. Parents Robert, Edward and Elizabeth, Annie. A confectioner’s shop assistant.

Sgt 43240 Robert Hayhurst Lowe of Latchford Cottage, Latchford Warrington is reported killed at Wancourt on the 23rd April aged 34. An estate agent.

Pte 27135 Joseph Lusher of 72, Hardybuth Wigan has been killed at Gheluvelt on the 3rd December aged 21. Joined the 16th Battalion on the 8-6-15. Joined 17th Battalion on the18th July 1916.

Pte 34826 Thomas Burton of 34, Clegg St Rochdale Rd Manchester is reported missing at Wancourt on the 23rd April aged 20.

Pte 8461 William Chant, a signaller, of 6, Heslington St Moss side was wounded in both feet and the ear at Flers on the 16th October 1916. Sent to 48th General hospital at Rouen and
died of septicaemia at the 4th General hospital, Stobhill, Glasgow, on the 24th April
aged 22. Buried in Southern cemetery, Manchester. Parents, Thomas and Annie

8443 James, Harold Boddy of 47, Cross Lane, Gorton has been admitted to Edinburgh war hospital [sick] on the 22nd October.

Pte 41639 Carl, Otto Effert of 71, Sussex St Brighton was reported missing on 23rd April, at Wancourt. Pte 8235 H.N Mattock, [same unit] wrote to Pte Efferts sister, and told her, “I saw your brother hit, but I don’t know what became of him afterwards. He didn’t answer the roll call. Parents Carl, Otto and Ellen. Aged 21.Listed on the Arras memorial.

Pte 42135 Reginald, Charles Elliott of 1, Coltham Fields, Cheltenham was reported wounded and missing, on the 31st July aged 26.

Pte 42198 Henry Affleck of 3, Grove square Musselburgh, Edinburgh has died in hospital at Etaples of wounds on the 22nd July aged 29. Leaves a widow, Annie.

Cpl 8043 Joseph Aiken of 11, Millom Square Hulme was killed at Wancourt on the 23rd April aged 27. Parents, Joseph and Eleanor. Educated at Nicholls School Ardwick.

Pte 43125 Fred Akers of 9, Turner St Preston has died of wounds in the CCS at Warlencourt aged 21. Leaves a widow, Annie

Pte 43130 Widmer Barnes of 11, Ratcliffe St Preston has died of wounds in the CCS at Outtersteene on the 28th September aged 23. Parents, William and Flora.


Cadet 40757 Albert Barton of 25, Hazel Rd Hoylake Cheshire died at home on 14th June and was buried in Hoylake [Holy trinity] churchyard aged 20. Parents, William and Mary.

L/Cpl 8079 Fred Blakeley of 20, Arthur St Prestwich is reported missing on the 23rd April aged 22.

Cpl 9470 Edmund Kane of 5, Edge St Hulme has been killed on the 31st July
aged 24. Parents, William and Mary

CSM 42119 Sydney Hall of Betchton Cottage Sandbach has been killed on the 28th June aged 32. Parents, Peter and Margaret.

Pte 45285 Albert Holbrook of 7, Mill St Failsworth is reported missing 31st July
aged 18. Parents, James and Mary, Ann.

Pte 43300 Frederick Howard of Nine Mile ride East Hamstead, Wokingham, Berkshire was killed on the 7th April aged 35. Parents, Robert and Charlotte.

Pte James Howard of 5, Dunscombe St Broughton has been killed on the 27th March
aged 30. Parents, Thomas and Ruth.

Pte 39531 James Hudspith of 34, Post Nook, Twist Lane Leigh is listed as missing on the 23rd April aged 25. Leaves a Widow Annie and a daughter Margaret.

Pte 34439 Thomas Booth of 165, Earl St Longsight is reported missing on the 23rd April aged 27. Parents, Alfred and Elizabeth, Boggart Hole farm Blackley.

Pte 38429 James, Henry Entwistle of 321, Manchester Rd Kearsley was captured at Cherisy,South of arras, on the 23rd April Died in hospital at Loos, on the 9th October. A member of St. Stephens’s church. Worked for the Liftable fireplace co. His brother Joseph is serving in the RAMC.

Cpl 18346 Frank Collinson of 70, Grey mare lane Bradford, Manchester has been killed on the 23rd April aged 29. Parents, James and Sarah, Ann

Pte 51103 James Davidson of 56, Henschell St Liverpool has been killed on the 31st July aged 19. Parents, James and Ellen.

Pte 377783 William Crook of 205, Warrington Rd Lower Ince, Wigan has died of wounds on the 3rd December. His body was not recovered. Parents Albert and Elizabeth.

Pte 43154 James Brunton of 22, Cliffe St Nelson has died in a German hospital, on 20th October aged 22.
